Woburn resident celebrates 30 years with Cummings Properties

Mike Szetela is the 16th employee to serve for three decades

Woburn resident Mike Szetela is the 16th colleague to join Cummings Properties’ exclusive “30 Year Club.”

A U.S. Army veteran, Szetela cut his teeth working with local general contractors before joining the Cummings team as a general laborer in 1985.

Currently a member of the grounds crew, he is a mason, carpenter, and CDL-licensed driver. He is also a long-time member of the Woburn-based commercial real estate firm’s “Snow Team,” which made the local news quite a few times during last winter’s epic snowfall.

Szetela has worked on most of the properties in Cummings’ 10 million-square-foot portfolio, forming “miles” of concrete sidewalks over the years, according to associate division manager and Woburn resident Brian Borselli.

“Mike is a jack-of-all-trades, equally adept at forming and finishing concrete as he is at setting ceramic tile in a luxury interior,” said Borselli.

In keeping with company tradition, Szetela enjoyed a lunch in his honor at Strega Prime Italian Steakhouse at TradeCenter 128.

Among the colleagues Szetela invited to his luncheon were Cummings Properties founder Bill Cummings and its longest tenured employee, George Holland, a lifetime Woburn resident who will be with the company 39 years this November. Cummings swapped stories with members of Szetela’s original crew, including several company retirees.

Szetela said he enjoyed working at Cummings Center in Beverly in the nineties, and remembers fondly the full year that Bill Cummings served as the supervisor at the Beverly site.

Originally from North Adams, he and his wife, Ellen, made Woburn their home 29 years ago. In his free time, Szetela is an avid golfer and enjoys spending time at the family vacation home in Hampton, New Hampshire.

Since its founding in 1970, Cummings Properties has frequently promoted from within. The firm currently has a staff of more than 350 from a variety of disciplines, including all of the construction trades, plus architecture, engineering, sales, graphic design, accounting, and legal.
