Woburn Softball Drops Opening Game

After cruising to the District 13 championship, Woburn will have to bounce back from an early loss in the state's Section 2 tournament.

After winning the District 13 championship last Thursday, Woburn’s 11- and 12-year-old softball team stumbled out of the gate Wednesday in the state’s Section 2 tournament.

Woburn was no-hit in its opening game at by Lynn Wyoma’s Michaela Hamill. However, despite the 4-2 loss, Woburn remains in contention in the double-elimination tournament, as they’ll play in the loser’s bracket at 5:30 p.m. tonight back at Weafer Park.

Hamill led the victors, who played as the home team, with six no-hit innings, which included nine strikeouts. She also went 3-3 in the leadoff spot, with two doubles and an RBI single.

Heading into the fourth inning, Woburn trailed 2-0 but ended up tying the game on two walks and a series of stolen bases and passed balls.

Woburn’s Nicole Vieria drew a walk to start the inning and then reached third base on a stolen base and an error. She was knocked in on a groundout by teammate Meaghan O’Brien. Julia Carey then walked and stole two bases, before scoring on a passed ball.

O’Brien took the mound for Woburn and went the distance, allowing eight hits and striking out six.

After single runs in the first and third innings, Lynn Wyoma would score two more in the bottom of the fourth; all with two outs.

Woburn’s first baseman, Brianna Lundin, made a couple great plays in the field. She snagged a hard-hit, high line drive in the second inning and had a great stretch in the fourth.
