Woburn Young Marines Volunteer Awarded Volunteer Of The Year

National Volunteer Week is celebrated April 19-25, a week dedicated to celebrating volunteers. Siobhan Fagan awarded Volunteer of the Year.

The Young Marines, a national youth organization, named Siobhan Fagan the “Division 1 Adult Volunteer of the Year.” She resides in Woburn, Massachusetts and is the unit training officer for the Blackstone Valley Young Marines in Milford, Massachusetts.

Fagan is what National Volunteer Month (April) and National Volunteer Week (April 19-25) is all about. She is making a huge difference to the youth members in the Blackstone Valley Young Marines.

Each Young Marine unit is led and guided by adult volunteers. No military participation – past or present - is required. There are 2,500 active and registered adult volunteers with the youth organization. Annually, one adult volunteer is selected from each of six divisions for “Division Volunteer of the Year.” Division 1 includes: Massachusetts, Maine, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, and Pennsylvania.

“I was and am greatly honored and humbled to have earned this honor,” Fagan said, “especially because my mom, my role model, won it twice before. I think I was recognized because I do small things well. To me, teaching a class isn’t teaching a class, it’s a chance to change a life. Talking about DDR isn’t just a check box, it’s a chance to save a life.”

The youth members of the Blackstone Valley Young Marines are very committed to community service. They participate in several parades, veteran’s appreciation, a flag football tournament, the Clear Path for Veterans’ Run, Buddy Bowl, and many DDR activities to raise awareness about a drug free lifestyle. The unit went to Pearl Harbor this year and supported the activities there. In addition, the unit supported Iwo Jima Day at the State House in Boston.

“I adore working with my Young Marines,” she said. “The program is a happy place for me, because I can help America’s youth become something more than what is expected. I can teach them a new way of looking at things. No elementary or middle school student hears the word ‘discipline’ or ‘humility’ or ‘generosity’ in a way that applies to them and their life – no student except a Young Marine.”

“Ms. Fagan is an extremely dedicated volunteer who truly enjoys seeing her Young Marines grow into responsible citizens,” said Col William P. Davis USMC (Ret), national executive director and CEO of the Young Marines. “Our volunteers choose to give us their most valuable commodity, their free time. We sincerely appreciate that Ms. Fagan gives much of her free time to the Young Marines, and I know they are thankful for all that she does."
