2 Dead In Wrong-Way Route 20 Collision: State Police
A Southbridge man and a Long Island woman both died in the Wednesday morning collision.
CHARLTON, MA — The two people killed Wednesday in a wrong-way collision along Route 20 were identified Thursday as a Southbridge man and a Long Island woman.
According to state police, Susan Celauro, 63, of East Norwich, N.Y., was driving a Subaru station wagon westbound in the eastbound lanes near Old Worcester Road around 11:30 a.m. when she collided with two eastbound drivers.
Celauro first hit a tractor-trailer hauling a boat, which caused Alexander Owanisian, 35, of Southbridge, to drive his Honda Fit underneath the trailer, according to state police.
Owanisian was pronounced dead at the scene, and Celauro died after the crash at UMass Memorial in Worcester. The driver of the tractor-trailer, a man from Mystic, Conn., was not injured, police said.
State police were still investigating why Celauro was driving in the wrong direction on Route 20.
