WORCESTER, MA — An annual community breakfast in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will take place on Monday, Jan. 19.
The community will gather at Assumption University to celebrate the nationwide day of service honoring the legacy of the late civil rights leader. The event, founded in 1985, has been a staple of the city for 41 years.
Several award winners will be acknowledged at the breakfast, including Worcester firefighter Kervin Lima, the president of the Worcester NAACP, Fred Taylor, and the former co-chair of the MLK Breakfast Committee, Philip Niddrie.

A number of students will also receive scholarships at the event through the breakfast committee's scholarship subcommittee and the yearly gold tournament. Since 1985, the committee has awarded over $200,000.
Those attending the breakfast are also asked to bring a new age-appropriate book related to MLK or diversity for second and third-grade Worcester Public Schools students.

This year, Dr. Jennifer Davis Carey, former director of the Worcester Education Collaborative, will serve as the keynote speaker. She has served in the education sector, including as director of minority recruitment at Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges, and served as directror of college counseling and director of diversity at Bancroft School.
“This event is an opportunity for people to enjoy themselves and continue the legacy of Dr. King,” said Nellie Toney, co-chair of the MLK Breakfast Committee. “Hundreds of people from all races, religions, ages and genders gather together. To keep that going for 41 years is a beautiful thing.”
The breakfast kicks off at 8 a.m. at the Plourde Recreation Center, 500 Salisbury St.
