At Least 6 People Injured, Numerous Pets Killed In Fire At Central MA Home

Several people, including one firefighter, were hospitalized on Monday afternoon.

SPENCER, MA — A two-alarm fire burned at a home in Spencer on Monday afternoon.

Six people were taken to the hospital with various injuries, and one firefighter, after crews responded to May Street at around 3 p.m., according to Spencer Fire officials. Numerous pets were killed in the fire, as well.

Officials did not share the firefighter's name or the station they worked at.

When they arrived, crews saw a large home well involved in heavy fire and began using a deck gun to knock it down, officials said.

Crews from Paxton, Leicester, East Brookfield, Brookfield, and Southbridge Fire Departments helped on scene, while Charlton and North Brookfield Fire Departments covered the fire station.

The fire is now under investigation by local and state officials.

"Thank you to Spencer Emergency Management and Rehab 7 and 8 on scene. Spencer and State police handled traffic. Luckily, we had extra firefighters working due to the blizzard. Normally there would have been only two people working. Having staff does matter," the Spencer Fire and Emergency Services wrote.
