WORCESTER, MA — Burncoat High School is entering the first phase of what could become a major school construction project through the Massachusetts School Building Authority, beginning a feasibility study process expected to take between five and seven years.
The Burncoat Building Project Feasibility Study will officially launch this month and explore options to improve or potentially replace the current school facilities at the Burncoat campus on Burncoat Street.
The study is being conducted through a partnership between the Massachusetts School Building Authority, the City of Worcester and Worcester Public Schools. During the feasibility phase, planners and consultants will evaluate the existing buildings, enrollment needs, educational programming and long-term facility options before any final recommendations are made.
One major question expected to be studied is whether a future school building project could combine grades 7 through 12 into a single facility. Burncoat High School currently serves grades 9-12 and includes performing and visual arts programming, while Burncoat Middle School serves grades 7 and 8 on the same campus.
The feasibility process is considered the first major step in the MSBA school building pipeline and includes community outreach, educational planning and design studies before a district can move into a potential construction phase.
Officials said the Burncoat School Building Project webpage will continue to be updated throughout the process as additional information becomes available.
As part of the study, Worcester residents are invited to participate in a Burncoat School Building Project Community Visioning Input Session on Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Burncoat High School, 179 Burncoat St.
The interactive workshop will be led by Dore and Whittier, Lamoureux Pagano & Associates Architects and New Vista Design. Organizers said community members will learn about the design process and project timeline while sharing feedback on educational priorities, design ideas and concerns related to the future of the Burncoat campus.
Additional educational visioning workshops are scheduled for May 19, May 26 and June 10 at Burncoat High School.
