WORCESTER, MA — A Harrison Street closure later this month will affect drivers near the bridge over I-290 for nearly two weeks.

Harrison Street will be closed to vehicles from 7 a.m. Jun. 15 through 7 p.m. Jun. 26 while crews install a new permanent sewer and drainage line across the Harrison Street bridge, according to a city traffic advisory. Pedestrian access will be maintained during the work.

Drivers should follow posted detour signs during the closure, city officials said.

The work will include trenching, pipe installation and precast concrete structure installation. Temporary bypass pumping will also be used while the work is underway, according to the city.

Construction work will be limited to daytime hours, but the bypass pumps will run 24 hours a day with a worker on standby to monitor them, city officials said. The work plan has been reviewed and approved by Worcester’s Department of Public Works.

The Harrison Street bridge work is part of a larger MassDOT reconstruction project involving both the Harrison Street and Laurel Street bridges over I-290. According to MassDOT, the approximately $19.9 million project includes bridge replacement work, structural repairs, ADA accessibility upgrades, sidewalk reconstruction and roadway improvements.

Patch previously reported on related phases of the project, including the reopening of the Laurel Street bridge earlier this year as construction activity shifted toward Harrison Street.

The full project is expected to be completed in spring 2028, according to the city.

MassDOT project details are available online here.
