STURBRIDGE, MA — Police are investigating an early Thursday shooting at a Sturbridge hotel that left a guest critically injured and the suspected shooter dead.

Sturbridge police, Southbridge police and Massachusetts State Police troopers from the Sturbridge barracks responded shortly before 1 a.m. Thursday to reports of a vehicle being driven into the Sturbridge Plaza Hotel at 400 Haynes St. Additional reports said shots had been fired into the hotel, striking a guest.

A preliminary investigation indicates the suspect drove to the hotel while trying to locate two people known to her, according to the Worcester County District Attorney's Office. Investigators said they do not believe the guest who was shot was one of the people the suspect was seeking.

Responding officers found the guest suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was taken to Harrington Hospital, then flown by medical helicopter to UMass Lakeside, where he remained in critical condition Thursday, the DA said.

Two officers and a trooper made contact with the suspect and tried to speak with her, according to police. The suspect then fired her gun again, causing a self-inflicted gunshot wound. EMS workers at the scene performed lifesaving measures, including use of a LUCAS machine, but the suspect was pronounced dead.

Authorities said they are not releasing any names at this time.

The investigation is ongoing by Sturbridge police, Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, State Police Crime Scene Services, the State Police Crash Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Firearms Identification Section and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
