WORCESTER, MA — A Long Island man has been charged months after a canoe capsized in Connecticut, killing a College of the Holy Cross student.
Michael Collins, 20, of Mineola, New York, was arrested on July 10 on a boating-under-the-influence charge stemming from the March 21 incident on Lake Hayward in East Haddam, Connecticut, according to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
Collins and Dominick Tocci, 20, of Woodstock, CT, were in a canoe that overturned after spending time on the lake with a group of friends, DEEP said. Collins was rescued by good Samaritans at the scene, according to DEEP.
Tocci, a junior political science major at Holy Cross, went missing in the water and his body was recovered on the afternoon of March 23 after an extensive search.
Investigators said both men had been drinking before launching the canoe, according to DEEP. An arrest warrant was issued by Connecticut Superior Court in Middletown on June 30 based on evidence gathered during the investigation, DEEP said.
Collins turned himself in to Environmental Conservation Police at Connecticut State Police Troop K on July 10 and was charged with operating a boat under the influence, according to DEEP.
He was released on a promise to appear and is scheduled to appear in court July 23, DEEP said.
