Capt. Richard will take on a leadership role at the Worcester County Jail and House of Correction in West Boylston. The sheriff's office is responsible for the care, custody and control of pre-trial detainees and inmates sentenced to two-and-a-half years or less.

The West Boylston facility opened in 1973 and has capacity for more than 1,000 inmates, with a staff of more than 600 correctional officers and civilians.

The sheriff's office said promotions are based on merit, work ethic and dedication to duty.

"Captain Richard exemplifies the professionalism, leadership, and commitment to excellence that define today's correctional professionals," the sheriff's office said in a statement on Wednesday.
