Worcester To Add 22 New Electric Vehicle Charging Ports

The city plans to expand its EV charging options by nearly 75 percent.

WORCESTER, MA — Worcester plans to expand its electric vehicle charging options by nearly 75 percent for drivers across the city.

Worcester will install 22 new Level 2 charging ports by the end of this year, raising its current count from 30 to 52. The city announced Monday that it will install the new charging stations at five locations.

Here's where the charging ports will be installed:

69 Sever St.: Four ports
Russell Street near Elm Park: Four ports
Providence Street near Vernon Park: Four ports
98 Woodland St. at Oberlin Street: Four ports
Great Brook Valley Park: Six ports

Each station will charge a small usage fee and an overstay fee. The rates will be posted at the sites.

Construction is scheduled to begin during the week of Sept. 14 and conclude by the end of December. Four locations will require work in streets and sidewalks, temporarily affecting parking, pedestrian access and traffic in the immediate construction areas.

"No-parking" notices will be posted 24 hours before work begins, and pedestrian detour signs will be installed on construction days. Police details will manage temporary road closures when needed.

The most disruptive work is expected to last one to two days at each location. Construction at Great Brook Valley Park will take place within a parking lot and is not expected to affect the public.

"Expanding EV charging access is a major goal of our Green Worcester Plan," Chief Sustainability Officer John Odell said, according to the announcement. "Transportation accounts for nearly a third of Worcester's community-wide greenhouse gas emissions, so this work is one of the most direct ways we can address climate change while making the city more livable."

Odell added that the stations will also make electric vehicles more accessible to residents without driveways or garages.

The Department of Sustainability and Resilience is leading the project in partnership with the departments of Parks, Recreation and Cemetery, Transportation and Mobility and Public Works.
