Motorcyclist Crashes Into Bear In Worcester County

PETERSHAM, MA — A motorcyclist was seriously injured over the weekend in an unusual collision on Route 122.

Emergency crews responded on Saturday after a motorcyclist collided with a bear on New Salem Road in Petersham near the New Salem town line. The person on the motorcycle sustained injuries requiring air transport by UMass Memorial LifeFlight, according to the Petersham Fire Department.

The motorcyclist was a 71-year-old man from Orange, Petersham Police Chief Peter Buck told the Greenfield Recorder. He was riding north when his motorcycle struck the bear shortly after 10 a.m., and the impact threw him from the motorcycle, according to the news outlet.

The bear, which weighed approximately 160 pounds, was killed in the collision and removed by Massachusetts Environmental Police, Chief Buck told the Greenfield Recorder.

Petersham police did not immediately respond to a request for more information regarding his current condition.

The response also included Petersham police and fire personnel, New Salem police, Orange police, Massachusetts State Police, New Braintree Dispatch and Massachusetts Environmental Police.
