WORCESTER, MA — A college in Worcester is preparing to bring a rapidly growing sport to its campus.
Assumption University will add women's flag football beginning in fall 2027, with the Greyhounds set to compete in spring 2028. Assumption will be among the first colleges in the Northeast to establish a program, according to the university.
Flag football joined the NCAA's Emerging Sports for Women program in January 2026, a step intended to support its growth at the collegiate level.
"As one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, women's flag football provides an exciting new opportunity for student-athletes to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level," Assumption Director of Athletics Eric Gobiel said in the announcement.
University officials said the program will expand athletic opportunities for students while supporting recruitment and campus engagement. Assumption also expects to help establish a foundation for regional competition as more colleges introduce the sport.
A national search for the team's inaugural head coach is underway. Interested candidates can apply online.
The university said additional details about the inaugural season, coaching staff and recruiting opportunities will be announced later.
