Auburn Honors and Remembers A Hometown Cop

Ronald Tarentino, who was shot and killed during a traffic stop over the weekend, was honored by the town he served.

AUBURN, MA—Auburn Police Officer Ronald Tarentino was honored on Wednesday night by the town he served.

Tarentino, who was shot and killed during a traffic stop on Rochdale Street in Auburn on Sunday morning, had served on the Auburn Police Department for the last two years, previously serving for many years on the Leicester Police Department.

Some 500-600 people turned out to Lemansky Park across from the Auburn Police Station to pay tribute and remember the officer.

Town Manager Julie Jacobson spoke, as did Fire Chief Stephen Coleman, Jr. , who honored former chief Belhumer. A moment of silence was held for Tarentino, and both a priest and minister issued prayers. Scott Taylor sang the Boston-born song "Home," and locals sang renditions of "America the Beautiful" and "The National Anthem."

Funeral and wake announcements were made for Thursday and Friday. Thousands have been donated so far to a memorial fund established for the fallen officer.
