About the collection: It’s an old story: a church-going family man receives a violent call to become a prophet. He’s read the source material, knows how this has ended for others. But without a means of running away, he reluctantly accepts a vocation he rightly fears will result in tragedy for his family. While receiving dreams and visions, delivering sermons and prayers, frequenting political protests and police stations, being placed in handcuffs and straitjackets, the prophet attempts to speak truth to power and make it home whole, if there is a home left to return to.&nbsp;Promises to Keep explores the fear and trembling and doubt required to have faith in ourselves, each other, and whatever forces may be guiding our steps. It demands we consider what we devote our lives to, what we say we love, and whether the cost of such devotion is worth it.
About the poet: Matthew E. Henry (MEH) is an educator, essayist, occasional fiction writer, and the author of seven poetry collections, most recently Promises to Keep (Wayfarer Books, 2026). He’s editor-in-chief of The Weight Journal and nonfiction editor at Porcupine Literary. MEH’s publications include Had, Lily Poetry, Massachusetts Review, Mom Egg Review, Pangyrus, Ploughshares, Stone Circle Review, Terrain, Whale Road Review, and The Worcester Review. MEH earned an MFA yet continued to spend money he didn’t have completing an MA in theology and a PhD in education. He writes about education, race, religion, and burning oppressive systems to the ground at <a href="https://www.mehpoeting.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">www.MEHPoeting.com</a>.

About the Book
In 1950’s New England, being a marriageable young lady means following a certain set of rules. Nineteen-year-old Sabina McTigue knows them all too well, thanks to her imposing Aunt Poppy, who has already decided a.) how Sabina will spend the season at their summer home in Edgartown, b.) which women’s college she’ll attend in the fall, and c.) the type of young man she’ll eventually marry.
But Sabina has other ideas. And the island, it seems, does too. Sabina is about to meet the Vineyard’s most notorious bachelor—charter pilot, Colin Hatch. With a cloudy service history, some questionable business arrangements, and a reputation for charming every available girl at the yacht club, Colin isn’t exactly the traditional match her aunt had in mind. When Sabina takes a chance on him anyway, a complex love triangle soon emerges, setting Sabina on an entirely different path—not just for this summer, but maybe for the rest of her life.
A coming-of-age story woven into a small, coastal town’s various dramas,&nbsp;Ways of Virtue&nbsp;reads like Dirty Dancing meets Jane Austen—complete with a beautiful seaside setting; a high-society wedding in the making; a host of scheming, jealous neighbors; and a once-in-a-lifetime hurricane, barreling toward them all the while.
About the Author
Liz O’Neill grew up in central Massachusetts and vacationed with her family every summer on Cape Cod. She earned her MFA in Creative Writing, Fiction from the University of North Carolina, Wilmington. She currently works at the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship, where she supports major brands looking to make better environmental, social, and governance decisions. Her research for Ways of Virtue has included interviews with local historians; shellfish conservationists; air traffic controllers; and one remarkable, small plane pilot, who succeeded somehow in talking her off the ground. She lives outside Boston with her husband, son, and the world’s best dog, Jiggs.
