WORCESTER, MA — Worcester' Black Box Theater is a step closer to being a reality with construction starting on Monday. The project is the next phase of redevelopment efforts at the former Telegram & Gazette complex. The first phase of the project was completed in April 2018 with the opening of the Worcester PopUP, a creative co-working event and gallery space.

The Black Box Theater is tentatively slated for completion in early 2020 and a project made from the partnership of the Worcester Business Development Corporation and the Worcester Cultural Coalition. The space will accommodate up to 295 people and provide ongoing revenue to support the operational costs of both venues. Collectively, the PopUP and the Black Box Theater is a center for creative innovation in the heart of downtown Worcester.

“The construction of the Black Box Theater aligns well with the City’s recently completed Cultural Plan which lists public space design and activation as one of its goals. The Theater will provide the city with an attractive, active, accessible and connected space that will support multiple and diverse forms of cultural and creative expressions,” said City Manager Edward M. Augustus Jr.
