WORCESTER, MA — Welcome to Wednesday, which has been one of the most consequential days in the coronavirus pandemic during the second surge.

Gov. Charlie Baker and state health officials rolled out a plan for distributing vaccines, with priority going to front-line workers and people with certain health conditions. Officials also said the statewide mask mandate may be in place for up to 9 more months.

And in a startling turn, Worcester City Manager Edward Augustus Jr. announced that he has tested positive for coronavirus and is exhibiting some symptoms. Augustus is one of just a handful of top government leaders in Massachusetts to have contracted the virus.
