Don't Ever Pick a Needle Up Off the Ground: DPW

Also, the DPW is reminding residents what to do with disposed needles, which are not allowed in the trash in Massachusetts.

WORCESTER, MA — The Department of Public Works in Worcester is sending a stern reminder to residents: never pick up a needle, and never dispose of your own needles in city trash.

"If you find a loose needle, do not attempt to pick it up," writes DPW on its Facebook page."

Instead, report it to the DPW&P Customer Service Center at 508-929-1300. If it is outside of business hours, please leave a message. When leaving a voicemail, please provide as many details as possible about the location of the needle. Staff from the Department of Inspectional Services will then retrieve the reported needle.

Disposal of sharps (needles, lancets and syringes) in household trash is prohibited in the state of Massachusetts. There are several locations within Worcester for safe disposal of sharps.
