The fire broke out at the Washington Street Table Talk facility as a protest was going on outside over safety violations.

WORCESTER, MA — A fire broke out Wednesday afternoon at the Table Talk pie factory along Washington Street in Kelley Square, filling the downtown area with white smoke and causing traffic backups in all directions.

The fire broke out at around 12:15 p.m. on the second floor of the pie factory, and had reportedly started near an oven and conveyor belt. At one point, flames could be seen shooting out of a smokestack on top of the building.

By 12:45 p.m., Worcester police were shutting down streets leading to Kelley Square, and the I-290 exit.

The fire hit as a group of protestors was demonstrating outside the factory over recent Occupational Safety and Health Administration violations against Table Talk and a company that hires temporary workers for the company. The two recent OSHA investigations involve amputations at Table Talk facilities along Southbridge Street and in Shrewsbury, according to the Worcester Business Journal.

Table Talk is planning to relocate the Washington Street headquarters to a new site along Gardner Street.
