Flood Warning Issued For Parts Of MA As Rain Hammers Region

Forecasters were warning of expected flooding in some of the most heavily populated parts of the state amid a long rain event.

WORCESTER, MA — The National Weather Service Tuesday morning issued a flood warning for a large section of Massachusetts between Worcester and Brockton as a long-duration rainstorm continues to hammer the area.

The flood warning issued near 9:30 a.m. Tuesday said residents should watch for roadway and small stream flooding throughout the day with heavy rains were expected to move across the state — on top of the 1-1/2 to 3-1/5 inches the state picked up Monday.

"Flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the warned area," the flood warning said. "In addition, several rivers and streams are experiencing rises due to continued rain and runoff from previous rain."

The rain had already flooded a section of Route 126 in Holliston, according to the weather service, and had caused scattered power outages in Worcester, Auburn, Sudbury and Southborough.

On Labor Day, heavy rain in the Providence area flooded I-95 and some neighborhoods in the city, stranding drivers and causing long traffic delays.

Another 2 inches of rain could fall across central Massachusetts and the South Shore today, the weather service said. The flood warning will be in effect until 4:15 p.m. Tuesday.
