Worcester Seeks Input On Citywide Fiber Broadband Network

WORCESTER, MA — Worcester officials are exploring how a citywide fiber network could expand internet access for residents and organizations.
The city announced Thursday that it issued a request for information seeking ideas from broadband vendors and industry stakeholders about developing a Fiber-to-the-Premises network. The initiative is intended to improve access to high-speed, reliable and affordable internet service for households, businesses, schools and nonprofits.
“The City of Worcester is actively working to bridge the digital divide,” City Manager Eric D. Batista said in a statement. “This RFI is the next step toward that goal and is part of our broader strategy to strengthen digital equity, expand economic opportunity, and enhance public services.”
The city is seeking information from organizations with experience in broadband infrastructure, network operations, emerging technologies, digital inclusion and public-private partnerships.
The request is an information-gathering step, not a competitive bid, and responses will not be legally binding, according to the city. The submissions will help shape Worcester’s long-term broadband plans.
Responses to the city’s request for information are due by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2.
Organizations may email submissions to ContactDoIT@worcesterma.gov with “RFI – Fiber to the Premises Response” in the subject line. Respondents with large files may use the same email address to request access to a secure file-transfer service.
