Gas Station Eyed For Vacant Lot In Worcester's Green Island

WORCESTER, MA — A prominent Rhode Island developer is seeking permission to build a new gas station on a long-vacant parcel in Worcester's Green Island neighborhood, according to plans submitted to the Conservation Commission.

The Neon Marketplace gas station and accompanying 5,800 square-foot store would take over the vacant 1-1/2 acre site near the corner of Quinsigamond and Arwick avenues, which is about two blocks south of Crompton Park.

The developer behind the project is Neon Marketplace Operating I, whose manager is Procaccianti Companies CEO James Procaccianti. Through subsidiaries, the Cranston-based companies owns dozens of hotels, restaurants and residential developments across the U.S., and a winery along the Rhode Island coast.

Neon Marketplace is a nascent chain of gas station convenience stores that so far has locations in Portsmouth and Middleton in Rhode Island. The Green Island site at 75 Quinsigamond Ave. was formerly a Nissen bakery that was demolished in 2012.

The proposal is scheduled to go before the Worcester Conservation Commission at the Sept. 13 meeting.
