Kelley Square 'Full Depth Excavation' Starts Today

Expect lots of digging and other assorted work this week in Kelley Square.

WORCESTER, MA — If for some reason you choose to drive through Kelley Square this week, you're going to notice a lot of digging going on.

MassDOT crews will begin a "full depth excavation" of Worcester's worst intersection as part of the ongoing reconstruction project. Even though the work sounds extreme, MassDOT said in a bulletin that the excavation "will not have any major impacts on traffic in the area."

Other assorted work this week includes drainage construction along Madison Street and utility work near Arwick Avenue and Gold Street. The excavation work will happen through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

But drivers and pedestrians should prepare now for the next major milestone in the project. In early May, traffic on Harding and Millbury streets will be permanently reversed. The switch will happen overnight.

Eventually, the middle of the intersection will get a big peanut-shaped roundabout, new crosswalks and bike lanes, and much more. Here's a video of what it will look like:
