Longtime State Rep. Jon Zlotnik Not Seeking Re-election

The legislator representing Worcester's 2nd district assumed office in January 2013.

WORCESTER, MA — A longtime state representative in Massachusetts has decided it's time to pass the torch.

Rep. Jon Zlotnik (D- 2nd Worcester) announced he will not seek reelection, bringing an end to a 14-year tenure representing the district in the House of Representatives. He assumed the office in January of 2013.

Zlotnik said he has decided not to file the paperwork required to appear on the November ballot, a step he has typically announced this time of year.

“I’ve decided not to seek another term as our Representative to the House and will leave office at the end of this term,” he wrote in a statement shared on social media.

Zlotnik reflected on his time in office, pointing to years of collaboration and progress within the district. He added that his initial motivation for running, bringing state resources together with local cooperation, remains central to the district’s future success.

“Over the last 14 years we have accomplished a great deal together and have much to be proud of in this district. Our community is resilient, and full of potential," he said. “It has been an honor to serve this district and now it is time to pass the torch."

The longtime representative also used the announcement to thank supporters who backed him throughout his political career, from campaign volunteers to voters.

“You’ve stood in all sorts of New England weather holding my signs. You’ve funded my campaigns, put my sign on your lawn, and encouraged me along the way,” he said. “You took a chance many years ago on a 21-year-old kid, fresh out of college, with little on his resume, and gave him a shot.”

His departure will open the seat ahead of the upcoming election, marking the first time in over a decade that the district will not have an incumbent on the ballot.

Other candidates have announced they will run for the seat that represents Gardner, Templeton, Ashburnham and Winchendon. Michael Nicholson, Nate Boudreau and John Reilly Jr. will run in the coming election, according to separate announcements.
