Man Shot on Elliot Street Has Died: Police

The homicide marks the sixth in Worcester this year. Investigators are looking for a suspect.

WORCESTER, MA—A man who was shot on Wednesday night on Elliot Street in Worcester has died, police announced.

Jose Ortiz, 26, from Worcester, was pronounced dead on Thursday at 9:30 p.m. at a local hospital. The death marks the sixth homicide in Worcester this year.

On Wednesday, Aug. 24, at approximately 9:06 p.m., Worcester police responded to the area of 2 Elliot St. for a report of a male that was shot. They found a 26-year-old man unconscious (later identified as Jose Ortiz) on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. EMS transported him to the hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

Investigators found that just before the shooting, Ortiz was arguing with another man who had gotten out of a minivan. The two argued briefly and then a single shot was fired, the suspect getting back into his vehicle and speeding off down Elliot Street toward Belmont Street.

After the shooting several neighbors came out of their homes and approached the victim.
