WORCESTER, MA — A two-year project to rebuild and widen the Plantation Street bridge in Worcester has started, according to MassDOT. By spring 2021, a new bridge will be in place that's 6 feet wider than the current one.

But the project will likely cause noticeable disruptions for drivers and pedestrians as soon as this spring.

MassDOT will shift all traffic to the west side of the bridge this spring, allowing crews to demolish the east side of the bridge. Traffic will be squeezed onto just the west side of the bridge. That configuration will flip in fall 2020 for the demolition of the west side of the bridge.

There will also be intermittent full closures of the bridge, which crosses train tracks just south of Route 9. Those will happen on nights and weekends.

When the project finishes in spring 2021, there will be sidewalks on both sides, and three travel lanes — a north and southbound lane and a northbound left turn lane. There will also be travel lanes for bikes across the bridge and onto Aitchison Street, according to MassDOT.
