MBTA Worcester Platform Project: Big Changes Start This Weekend

Starting this weekend, commuter rail riders will use a temporary boarding platform until late 2023.

WORCESTER, MA — Worcester commuter rail riders will encounter big changes at Union Station starting this weekend as the MBTA begins work on a new platform.

On Saturday and Sunday, riders will board trains via the parking lot at 45 Shrewsbury St. That temporary inconvenience will allow the MBTA to construct a new temporary platform at the far eastern end of the Union Station boarding area.

The temporary platform will be in place starting Monday and until the MBTA completes a new main platform. The agency estimates the project will be done sometime in fall 2023. Riders will still be able to reach the temporary platform by walking through the main Union Station building.

The MBTA is building a new center platform at Union Station to allow multiple trains to board at once. Union Station is the only one along the Framingham-Worcester line that can only board one train at a time. The upgrade allows for faster train service along the entire line, according to the transit agency.

The MBTA is also building a new pedestrian bridge from the lower parking lot at 45 Shrewsbury St. to the new center platform. Read more about the project on the MBTA website.
