WORCESTER, MA — Just in time for the cold weather, local residents now have a more direct route to Florida.

On Thursday, Jet Blue began running a direct flight from Worcester Regional Airport to Ft. Lauderdale. The new flight marks a turnaround for the airport, which lost all its commercial flights during the pandemic.

In addition to the new Florida route, Jet Blue also added a second daily departure to New York City's JFK Airport. The first New York flights began at the end of the summer. Before the pandemic, Delta and American Airlines offered flights out of Worcester to Detroit and Philadelphia, and Jet Blue offered a flight to Orlando.

The airport may soon return to almost full service. On Nov. 1, Delta will resume daily nonstop flights to LaGuardia Airport in New York, and American will restart Philadelphia flights on Nov. 2, according to Massport.
