WORCESTER, MA — City officials on Monday afternoon reported some good news related to the new coronavirus situation: there were no new COVID-19 cases to report, and several people had tested negative for the virus.

Over the weekend, Worcester confirmed its first and second presumptive positive cases. Of the five other people who were being tested for COVID-19, four tested negative — including several people who had ties to North High School and Chandler Magnet School.

But Worcester Medical Director Dr. Michael Hirsch warned that the city isn't out of the woods yet.

"We will see a bigger wave hit," Hirsch said. "Our goal really is to keep the rate of increase each day at an acceptable pace that won't overwhelm the medical system."

The total number of cases in Massachusetts hit 197 on Tuesday, up from 123 on Friday. Rutland Town Administrator Mike Nicholson confirmed that one of the state's newest cases is in that town.

The two people who tested positive in Worcester are in isolation and are being monitored by health officials.
