One Dead in Overnight Worcester Fire
The fire began at 3 a.m. Saturday, on Upsala Street, resulting in one death.

WORCESTER, MA- One person died after a three-alarm fire at 65 Upsala St. in Worcester, Saturday morning.
A release from the Worcester fire department said crews were told two people were trapped on the second floor of the home. One person was able to climb out of the second-floor window onto the first-floor roof where firefighters were able to rescue them.
When fire crews got to the scene, heavy flames were coming from the second floor and venting from the windows, according to fire officials. Crews searched the inside of the home and second floor for the person who was still stuck inside. Due to the heavy fire on the second floor and the enormous amount of debris in the house, preventing firefighters from advancing their lines, all companies were ordered out of the building to fight the fire from outside.
Once the fire was extinguished firefighters located the deceased victim among a large amount of
debris.
Chief Lavoie said “I am very proud of the efforts made by our firefighters this morning. They encountered extreme cold, a frozen hydrant, heavy fire and a very difficult building to maneuver in. We are deeply saddened by this loss but extremely grateful that the second resident was able to escape.”
A person from the first floor was transported to U MASS Memorial University Campus for non-life threatening injuries.
The fire is still under investigation.
