Payless Closing Several Worcester County Stores, Filing Bankruptcy

Less than two weeks after filing for bankruptcy, the company is closing 400 stores.

MASSACHUSETTS—Payless ShoeSource, which filed for bankruptcy less than two weeks ago, is immediately close 400 stores in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, including 11 in Massachusetts.

Founded in 1956, Payless operates 4,400 stores in 30 countries, including 3,600 in North America.
In January, Reuters reported Payless was in debt to the tune of $655 million.

  • Scarlet Brook Marketplace, West Boylston
  • The Center at Hobbs Brook, Sturbridge
  • Berkshire Mall, Lanesboro
  • Kingston Collection, Kingston
  • Walpole Mall, East Walpole
  • Greendale Mall, Worcester
  • Eastfield Mall, Springfield
  • Westford Valley Marketplace, Westford
  • Market Basket Plaza, Raynham
  • Wareham Crossing, Wareham
  • Shoppes at Blackstone Valley, Millbury

Originally, the company reportedly planned on closing up to a 1,000 stores, but the number was pared down, and may still be in flux, according to Bloomberg.
