Man Struck and Killed on Shrewsbury Street; Driver Allegedly Drunk

Crews responded to the scene around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday to Shrewsbury Street, where a man had been hit.

WORCESTER, MA — A woman is facing drunk driving and vehicle homicide charges after a 70 year-old-man was hit and killed as he tried to cross the area of 270 Shrewsbury St. on Wednesday night.

Rebecca Brooks, 37, 24 Laurel Lane, Whitinsville, was charged with motor vehicle homicide, operating under the influence of alcohol, and negligent motor vehicle operation.

Brooks was driving down the street, near Steward Street, and hit a man who was attempting to cross, seriously injuring him. He succumbed to his injuries a short time later at the hospital.

The woman driver was arrested after officers gave her a sobriety test. A witness told the Worcester Telegram that he had run to the victim to check for a pulse, which "faded."

Due to the severity of the incident, the WPD Crash Reconstruction Unit was called in to take over the investigation.

The name of the victim is being withheld until all family members have been properly notified.

Brooks remained at the scene after striking the man, said police.
