WORCESTER, MA — The Plantation Street bridge in Worcester will close for a full weekend at the beginning of August as MassDOT works to replace one side of the structure.

The bridge will be closed in both directions starting Aug. 1 at 5 a.m. and will reopen on Aug. 2 by 11 p.m., according to MassDOT. During the weekend, crews will install a prefabricated portion of the bridge.

The Plantation Street bridge rebuild kicked off in October. By spring 2021, a new bridge will be in place that's 6 feet wider than the current one. MassDOT crews will first demolish the east side of the bridge, and then switch to the west side.

When the project finishes in spring 2021, there will be sidewalks on both sides, and three travel lanes — a north and southbound lane and a northbound left turn lane. There will also be travel lanes for bikes across the bridge and onto Aitchison Street, according to MassDOT.

During the Aug. 1 closure, southbound traffic coming from UMass will detour around the bridge via Lake Avenue. The northbound detour takes drivers back downtown via Franklin, and then onto Grafton and Hamilton avenues before Lake Avenue up to Route 9.
