WORCESTER, MA — Black History Month will be observed throughout February, and institutions across Worcester will be recognizing Black history in a variety of ways.

Here are just a few events going on in Worcester for Black History Month in 2022:

WRTA Buses

  • A front seat on all Worcester Regional Transit Authority buses will be reserved throughout February in honor of Rosa Parks. The civil rights pioneer refused to move to the Blacks-only section of a bus during the 1955 the Montgomery bus boycott — eventually leading to a court case that desegregated buses in Alabama.

Worcester Senior Center

  • Craig Harris will present "Songs of Freedom" a "multimedia musical program exploring more than a century of union organizing, war protesting, civil rights demanding and environment protecting" on Feb. 17 at 10 a.m.
  • The movie "Respect" will be screened on Feb. 25. The movie chronicles singer Aretha Franklin's career from a church choir to international star.

Worcester Public Library

Worcester Black History Trail Committee

  • Residents can head to City Hall to see replicas of signs that will mark the city's Black History trail. The trail will go public over the summer, according to city officials, marking important historical sites across the city.
