Several Inches Of Rain May Fall In MA Amid Drought

With the region in a severe drought, this week may bring the first real chance of sustained rainfall in a long time.

WORCESTER, MA — We definitely need it.

With most of Massachusetts in a serious drought, this week will bring the chance of meaningful rainfall in a long time, according to forecasts.

The highest chance for rain will come on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, according to AccuWeather. By week's end, the state could see between 2 and 3 inches of new rainfall.

As of Thursday, a big section of eastern Massachusetts — including all of Norfolk and Bristol counties, plus eastern Middlesex and Essex counties — were in a severe drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. Almost all of northern and southern Worcester County were stuck in a severe drought.

Here's the forecast for the upcoming week, according to the National Weather Service:

Monday: Partly sunny, with a high near 78. East wind 3 to 6 mph.

Monday Night: A chance of rain after midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 60. Northeast wind 3 to 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Tuesday: A chance of rain. Partly sunny, with a high near 76. East wind 7 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Tuesday Night: A chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 60. North wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Wednesday: Rain likely. Partly sunny, with a high near 75. Northeast wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Wednesday Night: A chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 61. North wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Thursday: A chance of rain. Partly sunny, with a high near 79. Northwest wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.
