WORCESTER, MA — A morning of heavy rain in parts of Massachusetts was an appetizer for potentially damaging storms during the late afternoon hours, according to forecasts.

The entire state is at risk of strong storms with heavy downpours, plus high winds and a chance of an isolated tornado. Parts of the state west of I-495 are at a slightly higher risk, according to the National Weather Service.

AccuWeather forecasters said winds could reach gusts of up to 70 mph during the afternoon storms.

Tuesday's storms could mark the end of a volatile and wet pattern that's been lingering since Sunday. Southern New England will likely return to more early fall conditions on Wednesday, according to AccuWeather.

"The remainder of the Northeast will turn much drier. An area of high pressure is expected to move into the mid-Atlantic, allowing for normal mid-September temperatures across much of the East," AccuWeather said.
