Teen Arrested After Driving Off With Man Dangling Off Side of Truck

The teen allegedly drove with another man hanging out of the truck. He chest bumped, yelled at and kicked officers during arrest.

WORCESTER, MA—A teenager is facing several charges after police say he drove off with a truck, its owner hanging out of the side of it while the 17-year-old sped up city streets.

Shortly before 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19, Worcester police were called to an apartment on Eastern Avenue for an assault and battery. When an officer drove up Catherine Street, near Hooper, he spotted a white Ford pick-up truck speeding up Hooper Street and driving erratically. A young man was driving the truck, and another was hanging outside the driver's door by his arm. To the officer, it looked like the man had his arm wedged in the driver's door window, the rest of his body hanging off the truck. The victim, who was nearly struck by parked cars several times during the drive, was later identified as the truck's owner.

Eventually, the dangling man was freed and fell to the ground, the truck continuing on. When he fell, he was almost hit by the truck, after which the driver put the vehicle in reverse and nearly struck him again.

An officer told the driver to stop, almost getting hit by the truck, as well. The driver sped off, officers following him through several city streets. On Eastern Ave., the driver jumped out of the window with the truck left in gear. The driver ran off as the truck rolled into a fence.

Officers gave chase to the suspect through several back yards, with the suspect trying to duck into an apartment on Hooper Street. They apprehended the suspect in the hallway, where he violently resisted arrest. Officers slapped handcuffs on the suspect, and when they escorted him to the street, he chest bumped an officer, yelled profanities at all, and tried to break free while kicking another two officers.

The suspect was taken to the ground, after which he calmed down.

The driver, a 17-year-old juvenile male, was charged with Using Without Authority, Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon, 2 Counts of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, Operating a MV so as to Endanger, Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Accident, Unlicensed Operation of a MV, Malicious and Wanton Destruction of Property, Vandalism, Resisting Arrest and 2 Counts of Assault and Battery on a Police Officer.
The victim, 45-years-old of Rutland, was treated at the scene and then transported to a nearby hospital. The initial condition was serious. The victim’s current status is unknown at this time.
