UMass Chan Announces Hiring Freeze, Layoffs Potentially Coming: Report
An immediate hiring freeze was enacted by the UMass Chan Medical School, and layoffs are reportedly "necessary" and being discussed.

WORCESTER, MA - The UMass Chan Medical School announced an immediate hiring freeze, according to the Telegram & Gazette.
An internal memo circulated to the medical school community from the top of the administration cited President Donald Trump's nationwide medical and research funding cuts as the primary reason, and that furloughs and layoffs would be "necessary" and are currently being discussed.
The school could lose $40-50 million annually for research due to the funding reductions. The hiring freeze is immediate for faculty, grant-funded positions and internships. Promotions and raises are also on hold, and spending for conferences, consultants, travel and food has ceased.
