Torres ended up at MassBay after having left school to take care of her children. Her oldest daughter, Faith, 6, was born with disabilities. Seeing Faith work to overcome her disabilities inspired Torres to head back to school.

Torres is studying accounting, and is planning to transfer to a four-year institution to earn her bachelor's degree. She'll do that while working full-time as a teacher's assistant at a daycare center, and taking care of her children — including four daughters and four stepdaughters.

"I want to show everyone how proud I am to be in a country that provides many gateways and opportunities for all, especially for Hispanic mothers and women of color," she said in a MassBay statement. "I go to school to show my daughters no matter where you are in life, if you work hard for it, you can earn it. Singing the national anthem to the graduating class of 2020 at MassBay is a great blessing and I can’t wait to share that moment with all the graduates.”

MassBay graduated 670 students Tuesday at its 58th commencement ceremony.
