Worcester Area Ties High Temperature Record

The Worcester area set a record on Sunday, the hottest of a six-day stretch of oppressive temperatures.

WORCESTER, MA — Worcester set a new high temperature record on Sunday, which turned out to be the hottest of a multi-day stretch of recent hot days.

Worcester hit 91 degrees on Sunday, which is the fourth-hottest July 24 on record and tied with 1987, according to National Weather Service data. The hottest July 24 on record was recorded in 1910, when the region saw a maximum temperature of 94 degrees.

As hot as Sunday was in the Worcester area, it was practically cool compared to other parts of the state. Logan Airport, Norwood Airport and Lawrence all recorded 100 degrees, according to the weather service. Boston set a new record for the hottest July 24 on Sunday at 100 degrees.

The blast of heat that started on Wednesday was a bit cooler than it felt. High temperatures hit 89 on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and 88 on Thursday. But it probably felt much hotter due to humidity mixed in with the high temperatures. The National Weather Service said the heat index was up around 99 in Worcester on Sunday, and close to that on other days during the past week.
