WORCESTER, MA — An annual Worcester road race started after the cold storage warehouse fire in 1999 will return this weekend — the first Worcester Firefighters 6K held in June since 2019.

The unique 6K race — a number that memorializes the six firefighters who died in the cold storage fire — has been held each June since 2000. The 2020 race was called off due to the pandemic, and wasn't held again until October.

The run supports local nonprofits, primarily the Genesis Club, On-Site Academy, NEADS and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

The 2022 WFD6K will be held on Sunday, and the event is much more than a road race. The event will feature a performance by the Worcester Firefighter Pipes and Drum, and a special beer garden run by Pepe's along Humboldt Avenue.

The Sunday race begins at Institute Park at 11:30 a.m. Local runners — including kids — can sign up through the WFD6K website.
