WORCESTER, MA — A local man who provided life-saving care for a badly injured teen after a deadly July crash received Worcester's top honor on Tuesday: Jayxavien Nunez was given the key to the city by the Worcester City Council.

Nunez, 20, was one of the first people on the scene on July 23 when a speeding SUV carrying five teenagers crashed near the intersection of Chandler and Main streets. He was walking in the area when the SUV collided with two cars stopped at a traffic light.

Nunez saw one injured teen with a serious leg wound. He applied a tourniquet before medics and police arrived at the scene, likely saving his life.

District 5 Councilor Etel Haxhiaj highlighted that Nunez wants to become a paramedic, and asked if any schools in Worcester might be able to step up to help him.

Mayor Joseph Petty replied that city officials and police Chief Steven Sargent are already working on helping him reach that goal.

"The city's got your back," Petty told Nunez.
