WORCESTER, MA — Worcester is bracing for a hit from a nor'easter that could drop a foot of snow or more in the area.

As of Monday evening, Worcester had issued a parking ban, called off school and canceled trash and recycling pickup during the storm.

Worcester will be under a winter storm warning all day Tuesday into Wednesday with 12 to 18 inches of snow possible in the area. The storm will start off as rain Monday before changing over to snow.

Here's what to know about the city's storm preparations:

Parking Ban

The parking ban begins at 12 a.m. Tuesday, and means parking is only allowed on the odd side of side streets. Parking will also be prohibited on either side of main arteries, bus routes, emergency routes and downtown-area streets.

"During the Declared Winter Parking Ban, parking is prohibited on either side of main arteries, emergency and bus routes, and streets in the downtown area critical to the flow of traffic. On all other streets, parking is only permitted on the odd numbered side of the street, unless otherwise posted," the city said in a bulletin.

For residents who don't have access to off-street parking, the city opened municipal garages at 8 p.m. Monday for free.

Schools closed

Worcester Public Schools won't hold classes on Tuesday. Head start programs are also canceled. The district does have online learning tools available to parents and students.

The Worcester Public Library's Burncoat, Goddard, Great Brook Valley, Roosevelt and Tatnuck branches will all be closed.

Trash, recycling

It's canceled on Tuesday. The portion of the city that gets trash and recycling pickup on Tuesday — basically all areas east of Indian Lake and north of Route 9/Belmont Street — will have pickup on Wednesday. But that means everyone else's pickups will happen one day later.
