Moral Victory For KP Girls Hockey

Warriors take undefeated Medfield to the brink before falling 3-2.

It wasn’t the outcome that the King Philip girls hockey team was hoping for, but a 3-2 loss to undefeated Medfield at the Foxboro Sports Center was a step in the right direction.

"This was huge, and the girls are happier than a pig in you-know-what right now,” King Philip Coach Paul Lyons said. “We’re not in the ranks of the Medfields, Cantons or Franklins, but this game gives us a lot of confidence going forward.”

The Warriors got on the scoreboard first, one minute and twenty-two seconds into the game, when Danielle Hamilton took a Kristen Haley pass and deposited the puck between the Mansfield goalies pads.

The Warriors (blue and white) evened the score following an Allyssa Siegmann save. When the defense couldn’t get the puck away from the net, Medfield was able to push it underneath the KP keeper to knot the score at one.

“That’s been the story of our season,” the coach said. “We can’t get the puck out of our zone and it comes back to haunt us.”

Medfield would add a power-play goal to take a 2-1 lead, but before the period could come to a close, King Philip would once again even the score with a power-play goal of their own.

Meghan Montgomery and Haley Anchukaitis would play pass behind the Medfield net before finally centering the pass out front. Hamilton was the recipient of the pass, and quickly put the puck in the back of the net for her second goal on the night.

“That’s what a power-play goal should be,” Lyons said. “Taking our time moving the puck around until you find the open shooter.”

King Philip continued to make dangerous centering passes during the second period, but luckily Siegmann came up with the big saves to keep the Warriors (green and gold) in the contest.

With a mere 1:23 left in the second stanza, Medfield was finally able to beat the KP goalie with the eventual game winner. After a brilliant rush by Medfield, Siegmann made yet another initial save, only to have the rebound pushed past her and over the line.

The loss drops KP to 2-9-2, while Medfield stays unbeaten at 12-0-2. The Warriors will skate next on Wednesday night against Westwood and will host Franklin Saturday night on senior night.
