16 Hurt In Massive Pileup On I-96 In Ionia County​: Police

PORTLAND, MI — At least 16 people were injured Saturday in a massive pileup on Interstate 96 in Ionia County, according to Michigan State Police.

The injured people were taken to a nearby hospital, but police said none of the injuries were serious.

State troopers said 150 vehicles crashed along a five-mile stretch of eastbound Interstate 96 near Grand River Avenue and Portland Road in Portland during whiteout conditions Saturday afternoon.

Both lanes on the freeway in the area were closed down for several hours, before reopening at 10 p.m. Saturday night, police said.

A lake-effect snow advisory was in effect for portions of central, south-central, southwest and west-central Michigan until 2 a.m. Sunday, with snow accumulations between 1-3 inches and wind gusts as reaching as high as 35 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service.
