Michigan's hiking trails offer outdoor enthusiasts some of the best views in the nation.
As the largest state east of the Mississippi River, Michigan has more than 4,000 miles of state-designated trails that lead to waterfalls, mountain tops and sparkling lakes.
Here are some of the best hiking trails across Michigan:
Roughly a quarter of the 4,600-mile path rests in Michigan, offering stunning views of Lake Superior and spectral lake views throughout the Lower Peninsula. Difficulty: level varies.
When completed, the trail will become one of the nation's longest state trails, stretching from Detroit’s Belle Isle Park up through the Mackinac Bridge and west until it reaches the Upper Peninsula town of Ironwood. Difficulty: level varies.
The 43-mile trail takes you through Isle Royale National Park, one of the least-visited national parks because it is on a remote island. The trail offers stunning views of Lake Superior, white pine forests and granite outcroppings. Difficulty: hard.
Deemed the "picture-perfect route" by Pure Michigan, the route takes you by Au Sable Light Station, alongside Chapel Rock and Spray and Bridalveil Falls. Difficulty: moderate.
This route is deemed the most beautiful of the many Sleeping Bears Dunes trails. The 3-mile trek passes through wildflower-strewn meadows and forests of paper birch through and over rolling sand dunes. A short spur leads out to a breathtaking Lake Michigan overlook. Difficulty: moderate.
