Ex-Michigan Football Coach Sherrone Moore Sentenced For Incident At Ex-Staffer's Home

ANN ARBOR, MI — Former Michigan Wolverines football coach Sherrone Moore was sentenced Tuesday on misdemeanor charges for an incident involving a former staffer with whom he had a relationship.

Washtenaw County Judge Cedric Simpson sentenced Moore to 18 months probation. He also ordered Moore to pay a total of $1,345 in fines and court costs. He cannot use alcohol or drugs and must continue mental health treatment.

Moore cannot have any direct or indirect contact with the former staffer, and cannot discuss her online or go to her place of work.

Moore pleaded no contest to malicious use of a telecommunications device involving a domestic relationship and trespassing last month, both misdemeanors.

In exchange for the plea, prosecutors dismissed charges of third-degree home invasion, stalking and breaking and entering.

Moore had faced up to six months in jail for the two misdemeanors.

"Your honor, I want to thank my Lord and savior, Jesus Christ, for his grace and guidance during this difficult time. I want to thank my wife, Kelli, for her support and strength in standing by me. I want to thank this court and its staff for their time and consideration. I am grateful to my attorney, Ellen Michaels, for her guidance. I’ve taken this process very seriously and worked closely with the probation department to prepare for today’s sentencing, and I am ready to proceed," Moore said before sentencing.

The former staffer, Paige Shiver, released a statement after the sentencing, calling the incident "the most terrifying day of my life."

"The University of Michigan gave this man limitless power and emboldened him to do whatever he wanted for years with no accountability. December 10th was the most terrifying day of my life," Shiver said in a statement to WDIV. "The criminal acts he committed were extremely frightening and violent. He broke into my apartment, crying, yelling, enraged, and came at me with knives. I was threatened, and I feared for my life. Today’s sentence does not reflect the harm done to me or the objective evidence in this case."

The incident happened on Dec. 10 when the University of Michigan fired the 39-year-old coach for engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member, which the university said "constitutes a clear violation of university policy."

Less than an hour later, Moore was arrested after officers responded to a home in the 3000 block of Ann Arbor Saline Road in Pittsfield Township for a report of an assault.

Prosecutors said Moore broke into the former staffer's apartment and blamed her for losing his job. They said he grabbed butter knives and kitchen scissors and threatened to kill himself.

Prosecutors said the two had been involved in an intimate relationship "for a number of years."
