Mackinac Island Is Getting A Speed Limit, Thanks To E-Bikes
Lawmakers said some electric bicycles can reach speeds up to 28 mph, posing safety hazards for other bicyclists, horses and pedestrians.
MACKINAC ISLAND, MI — The main road on Mackinac Island is getting a speed limit, though you cannot drive a vehicle on the road, according to the Michigan governor's office.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Monday signed the bill, which limits bicycles and electric-powered bicycles to 15 miles per hour while riding on Michigan 185.
Lawmakers say the speed limit is needed because some electric bicycles can reach speeds up to 28 miles per hour, posing safety hazards for other bicyclists, horses and pedestrians.

Michigan 185, also known as Lake Shore Drive, is a highway that loops around Mackinac Island in just over 8 miles. Visitors use the road to get around the island by bicycle, horseback, horse-drawn carriage or on foot.
The law was sponsored by state senator John Damoose of Harbor Springs.

"I spoke with Mackinac Island officials and worked out agreeable terms prior to formally introducing the legislation earlier this year. This was an important update that had bipartisan support all the way to the governor’s desk," Damoose said. "The newly signed law will maintain access for those with limited mobility but will also make sure visitors and residents on the island stay safe and are able to enjoy the unique Pure Michigan opportunities that Mackinac Island has to offer."
It's unclear when the law will be implemented.
