Man, 5-Year-Old Girl Die After UTV Breaks Through Icy MI Pond: Sheriff

Officials said they were riding an off-road vehicle across a pond on private property​ when it broke through the ice.

WESTPHALIA TOWNSHIP, MI — A man and a 5-year-old girl died after a UTV they were riding fell through an icy pond Wednesday in mid-Michigan, according to sheriff's officials.

The incident happened at 5:20 p.m. in the 9000 Block of Clintonia Road in Westphalia Township, Clinton County Sheriff's officials said.

Officials said the man and his granddaughter were riding the off-road vehicle across a pond on private property when it broke through the ice.

Officers pulled both of them from the icy water and took them to U of M Sparrow Hospital where they died, officials said.

News reports identified the man as 50-year-old Eric Miles from Portland. Officials say they will not release the name of the 5-year-old girl, who is also from the Portland area.
